Six public and private organizations in the field of media education came together on June 10 at UNESCO House (Myeongdong, Seoul) to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in a joint effort to promote Media and Information Literacy (MIL). The participating organizations were the Korean National
Commission for UNESCO, the Community Media Foundation, the Korea Education and
Research Information Service, the Korea Press Foundation, the National
Information Society Agency, and the National Association of Community Mediacenters.
Attendees at the ceremony included the Deputy Prime Minister
and Minister of Education, Yoon Eun-hye, and the chiefs of each of the
participating organizations.
Under the MoU, the organizations agreed to work together on a
variety of measures to promote MIL, including efforts to co-host international
conferences and joint memorial week events, to develop and support MIL
promotion programs, to share human and material resources, and to develop joint
programs.
The six organizations that have signed the MoU will establish a
mutual cooperation system aimed at tearing down the walls between the public
and private domains in implementing joint projects to promote MIL.
Their first project following the signing of the MoU is the
designation of the last week of November (November 24 ~ 30) as Media and
Information Literacy Week, during which multiple events will take place all
over the Republic of Korea. The parties also plan to hold a joint conference, the '2019 Media and Information Literacy International Conference,' from November 28 to 29.
