‘Understanding World Heritage Interpretation and Presentation’

The preparatory office for International Centre for the Interpretation and Presentation of World Heritage Sites under the auspices of UNESCO (hereinafter the Centre) will be holding an online lecture series titled Understanding World Heritage Interpretation and Presentation, starting on 10th September.

 


The Centre is a UNESCO Category 2 organization implementing UNESCO strategies in the field of world heritage interpretation and presentation, and its establishment was approved at 40th UNESCO General Conference in November 2019.

There will be three series (18 lectures) in total, with 6 lectures of the 1st series being conducted this year from September to November under the theme of UNESCO World Heritage and Heritage Interpretation. The 1st series of lectures will be conducted twice a month starting from 10th September, at 10 pm(KST) with a lecture by ▲ Neil Silberman, Professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, titled Introduction to World Heritage Interpretation. He will be followed by ▲ William Logan, Professor Emeritus at Deakin University, UNESCO World Heritage Listing & World Heritage Interpretation on 17th September, ▲ Shu-Mei Huang, Professor at National Taiwan University, World Heritage Interpretation for Cultural Reconciliation on 7th October, ▲ Yujie Zhu, Senior Lecturer at The Australian
National University, Research School of Humanities & the Arts, 1972 World Heritage Convention & World Heritage Interpretation (22nd Oct), ▲ Peter Bille Larsen, Senior Lecturer at University of Geneva, Department of Anthropology, Minority-Inclusive World Heritage Interpretation (12th Nov), ▲ Gamini Wijesuriya, Special Advisor to the Director-General, International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property, Comprehensive World Heritage Interpretation (26th Nov).

The lectures will be made available to the public via the Cultural Heritage Administration and the Centre Preparatory Office’s YouTube channel and the Facebook page. The first lecture will be held at 10 pm(KST) on 10th Sep and consist of a 30-minute presentation and a 15-minute Q&A session. The lectures and Q&A sessions will be conducted in English and publicly accessible for viewing without prior registration. Videos of the sessions will be uploaded to the YouTube channel and Facebook page after the Livestream to be viewed at any time. The time schedule of lectures will be adjusted according to the local time in the region of the speaker’s residence, and the time will be announced in advance on the preparatory office’s YouTube channel and Facebook page.
